Located in the Mekong Delta, it is convenient for Tien Giang to expand area of specialty fruit trees with competitive advantages, favored in the domestic and export markets. Called the "Fruit Kingdom", the province now has got more than 77.700 ha of fruit cultivation area, production per year is over 1,6 million tons with many kinds of specialty fruits: Hoa Loc mango, Ngu Hiep durian, Tan Phuoc pineapple, Cho Gao dragon fruit, Lo Ren Vinh Kim milk apple,... Last year, the production value of fruit business in the province is estimed to be more than 25.000 billion VND, accounts for more than half of the total value of the local agricultural sector.
In order to improve the competitiveness of Tien Giang fruit and embrace opportunities brought by the 4.0 industrial revolution, the province reorganizes to produce by forming specialized farming area which produce a high output, strengthens the technology transfer of agricultural, encorages farmers to apply VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards to produce high-quality fruits with traceable origins. Now, it has a concentrated pineapple growing area of 16.000ha in Tan Phuoc District, 9.200ha of durian, 7.000ha of dragon fruit, 4.000ha of mango, 4.000ha of soursop, 300ha of Go Cong cherry, ... In which, more than 600ha of speciality fruit trees are recognized as reached VietGAP and GlobalGAP certification.
According to Mr. Doan Van Phuong, Director of Tien Giang Department of Industry and Trade, the province shows great potential for fruit development. However, to promote this strength, it is necessary to find the output for products and the stable consumer market for specialty fruits, especially trade promotion strategies on the domestic and export markets, combined with process of preliminary and bringing products to market, in order to exploit the added-value of fruit industry.
These are the thing that should command priority attention of the province. Mr Le Van Nghia, Vice Chairman of the Tien Giang provincial People's Committee, said that the province has promoted trade promotion activities in association with the consumption of agricultural products on the domestic and foreign markets: participation in 2016 the 16th Vietnam - China International Trade Fair in Ha Khau (China); in 2017 Tien Giang province attended the 17th Vietnam - China International Trade Fair in Lao Cai; in 2018 attended the conference on promotion of the import and export of agricultural products, fruit and seafood between Vietnam and China in Lao Cai from (July 12-15, 2018), and in this year Tien Giang held the Investment Promotion Conference 2018, which was attended and directed by the Prime Minister, and coordinated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to organize the Mekong Delta - Tien Giang Agricultural Trade Fair, with 240 booths of 118 businesses in Tien Giang and other provinces.
In addition, Tien Giang cooperates or signs contracts on the consumption of goods and agricultural products, including major fruits with large domestic consumer markets: Hanoi, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh… The province has 53 establishments buying and supplying specialty fruits to Hanoi city, the average annual output is about 5.300 tons.
From the first half of 2017, People's Committee of Tien Giang Province and People's Committee of Da Nang City signed a cooperation agreement on production and consumption of fruits and high quality aquatic products in the period of 2017-2020. By mutual agreement, Tien Giang supplies Danang with 26.000 to 30.000 tons of fruits per year.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the enterprises and cooperatives in the province connect supply to demand, supply major agricultural products to big distributors such as Big C Supermarket, Lotte Mart, Citi Mart , A Chau Supermarket ... Recently, on February 14, 2019, Tien Giang cooperated with Vietnam Airlines to bring Hoa Loc mango and green skin pomelo grapefruit to meal service for Business Class passengers on international and domestic flights.
Mr. Doan Van Phuong, Director of Department of Industry and Trade said, trade promotion brings Hoa Loc mango and green skin pomelo to Vietnam Airlines meals in order to promote specialty fruits of the province. In the near future, the province will bring more seasonal, specialty and high quality fruits to serve on Vietnam Airlines flights, opening up great trade opportunities for Tien Giang fruit.
For the overseas market, Cho Gao dragon fruit, Ngu Hiep durian, Lo Ren Vinh Kim milk apple, green skin pomelo,... are main export items. Thanks to exports, agricultural products are high-priced, incomes of farmers can reach from half a billion to billions of VND/ha. People from difficult situation now have established the stable and rich career after a few years cultivating specialty crops.
Many businesses in Tien Giang province have efforts to promote trade, more fruit export success, such as Cat Tuong Agricultural Processing and Production Company Limited became the leading fruit exporter in Tien Giang province, mostly exports dragon fruits to China and other countries.
Milk apple has been allowed to import into the US market. In December 2017, in Tien Giang, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and People's Committee of Province held a ceremony on the first bach of milk apple exported to the US. This ceremony opened a new opportunity for Lo Ren Vinh Kim milk apple, the most delicious Vietnamese milk apple. According to the report of the Tien Giang People's Committee, in 2019 - the second year after this event, the province exported more than 115 tons of milk apple to the US. Together with milk apple, mango, pomelo and other specialty fruits continue to penetrate into the fastidious market, it means that trade promotion activities for fruit works efficiently. The province now has high volume production of fruits of high economic value, favored in domestic and foreign markets, but the export performance has been inadequate. Last year, the province exported 10.522 tons of fruits, posted a turnover of 17.2 million USD, increase of 28,3% in volume and 20,11% in value.
For export market, Tien Giang fruit need to be overcome huge challenges: too dependent on the Chinese market and mainly by non-quota export. Now, the non-quota export is no longer favorable, while quota export faces many trade barriers and requires strict compliance. According to Mr. Le Van Nghia, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee, in order to overcome the obstacles to fruit market integration, all organizations must implement synchronous solutions, such as: re-organization of production by streamlining the crop associated with the restructuring of crops and livestock, and investment value chain attached to the market. The People's Committee also directed departments and agencies to implement projects on restructuring agriculture and industry; focus on trade promotion and attract investment to the processing industry; seek to expand trade and export markets; review domestic and foreign markets, do the market-based forecasting for businesses, collective economic organizations, farmers and improve the efficiency of the model of agricultural commodity consumption. In addition, with the support of the ministries and government, the province helps the enterprises, cooperatives and farmers organizations in the province to participate in trade fairs, exhibitions, in order to seek stable markets for agricultural products, and to bring opportunities to effectively promote brand, improve people's quality of live and enrich their homeland.
