Promoting the potential of aquaculture at the Tien estuary
Currently, the coastal districts of Tien Giang province including Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong are promoting the potential of aquaculture in the coastal area and Tien estuary, creating valuable agricultural resources for consumption and export, create jobs and income for local people.
In Tan Phu Dong district, farmers have stocked 2,061 hectares, of which mainly brackish and saltwater shrimp farming on an area of 2,052 hectares, in two forms of extensive farming and industrial farming, the rest one stock freshwater aquaculture. Farmers have harvested nearly 100 tons of products. The district strives to achieve the harvested output of about 20,000 tons of aquaculture products for the market in 2019.
Go Cong Dong district develops the potential of brackish and saline aquaculture in the direction of diversifying forms of farming and objects of adaptation to climate change and bringing about great socio-economic efficiency, helping the appearance of the coastal area change positively. In particular, in addition to shrimp, they also pay attention to raising clams and fish farming, etc. According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Go Cong Dong district, in the first quarter of 2019, farmers have raised 105 hectares of shrimp and simultaneously the practice of stocking raised clam on a total area of 2,200 ha of Tan Thanh coastal alluvial ground. Shrimp and clam are traditional farming objects of Go Cong Dong coastal district.
Go Cong Dong district has advantages with over 30km of coastline, which is suitable for developing brackish and saline aquaculture with high export processing value. In order to help farmers develop their potentials and advantages of aquaculture in brackish water and saline water to adapt to climate change, in the past time, local authorities have paid attention to strengthening agricultural extension, scientific and technical transformation of intensive cultivation, etc. In the first quarter of 2019, Go Cong Dong district organized 50 seminars, training on intensive techniques, prevention of diseases to protect plants, animals and aquaculture for more than 1,700 farmers.
Currently, Go Cong Dong and Tan Phu Dong districts are two key areas of brackish and saline aquaculture cultivation of Tien Giang province. Thanks to promoting this important economic potential, many farmer households become richer, agriculture and rural areas are being innovated, helping many communes to soon complete the criteria and launch new rural communes.
