Over the past 10 months, Tien Giang province has exploited over 123,000 tons of seafood, with an increase of 6.5% over the same period last year. The province is striving to exceed the target of exploiting over 130,000 tons of seafood by 2020, creating a source of commodity agricultural products for consumption and export processing.
Being a coastal province in the South of Vietnam, Tien Giang province has a coastline of over 30km, with traditional deep-sea fishing for a long time, contributing to job creation and income for workers, ensuring social security. Places, where have the developed fishing profession, are My Tho city, Go Cong town, Go Cong Dong district, Go Cong Tay district, etc.
The province has a fleet of over 1,400 fishing boats, most of them are large-capacity ships, specializing in offshore fishing with the main fishing grounds: Truong Sa, the DK1 rigs, the West Sea, the Nam Con Son Sea, etc. In recent years, the province's fishing industry has strongly changed from small business to the forms of groups, teams, etc. while helping to prolong operation, improving exploitation efficiency, providing mutual assistance in case of natural disasters or disadvantages and risks associated with offshore fishing.
Up to now, the province has mobilized to set up 44 cooperative groups with 405 ships, 01 exploitation cooperative with 07 ships and 03 deep-sea fishing unions with 98 ships. According to the functional sector, from the beginning of the year up to now, the sea exploitation situation is favorable, the fishing exploitation output has increased significantly, fishermen have income, creating more jobs for marine workers in the shore services such as purchasing, transporting, consuming, drying, making fish sauce, etc.
In order to support and develop the fishing industry in the right direction, especially combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU fishing), the province pays attention to guide and disseminate the 2017 Fisheries Law and its guiding documents, regulations, regulations and guidance documents related to IUU fishing through diversified and appropriate forms to raise awareness of compliance the law of fishermen. On the other hand, maintaining and enhancing the management and supervision of fishing ships entering and leaving ports, monitoring of production as well as certifying catch certification, ensuring food safety at fishing ports, creating conditions for fishermen to promote their traditional jobs, ensure their income, stabilize their lives, both stick to the sea and contribute to preserving the sea and islands.
